The Cthulhu Campaigns: Ancient Rome (Dark Osprey), by Mark Latham

Rome, the greatest empire the world has ever known, limitless in breadth and power, magnificent in its glory! But something evil, ancient, and unknowable gnaws at the heart of the empire. Dark gods, trapped for centuries in thrice-warded tombs, have been disturbed by Roman plunderers. A secret war is fought daily between those who would harness this strange power for themselves, and those who fear it signals the very end of the empire.Across the sea, roused from eternal slumber by a world awash with war, by omens and pagan slaughter, a Great Old One waits for the way to be opened. A cosmic terror that man was not meant to know. Those who know its name tremble, and only the very brave--or very foolish--incant it for their own ends. They whisper it in darkness; they cry it from atop blasted hills; they scream it to the raging oceans.“Cthulhu . . .”

This is essentially a list of pagan gods from distant antiquity. Drawing largely on the Cthulhu Mythos, it brings together disparate beings from religions native to Druid Britain, Egypt, Parthia and numerous other nations and peoples, all drawn under the umbrella of the Roman Empire. While the various deities are mentioned in significant numbers, scant detail is given with little information pertaining to any one or any one group of these creatures.Further, there is nothing pertaining to campaigns, military or otherwise. There are numerous references to terrible battles in catacombs, tombs and pyramids, but no detail or specifics are provided.I found it more than slightly disappointing.

An inferior product to the previous installment in this series. Not sure with which canon (as far as this can be applied to the Cthulhu Mythos") the author went but it felt quite disconnected from how these occult elements were described in the original stories. It felt very Dungeons & Dragons-y where Old/Outer/Elder Gods are more powerful the more followers they have and answer to prayers with boons and curses and magic artifacts are littered everywhere giving powers to the wielder (to they are mostly cursed too).

Cute overview of the history of Rome from a Cthulhu POV. OTOH, it is so broad that it is only the barest sketching for any campaign. I'm going to guess from their other stuff that the Chaosium book would be better and if you want another idea sourcebook, I'd suggest Vettius and Friends by David Drake and his Killer would be another good way to spawn some ideas.

Well researched, with the Mythos seamlessly woven into real world events. A very entertaining read. As a Lovecraft fan, and as someone who studied Roman history in school, I enjoyed the glimpse into a dark past.

wow, thought that i was buy an rpg supplement, and in a woderfully visual way you bet i did!

Love the book fits perfect with the Broken legions game ,wonderful Cthulhu fluff and game scenario ideas.
